Magnetic Shawl Closure - Obvara in Neutral Tans and Greys

Our handmade clay brooches are individually decorated using a tehnique which makes each a unique item. This piece can be used as a brooch or a shawl pin. It has a powerful magnet on the back and can be used through multiple layers of fabrics. Perfect for supporting fine lace weight crochet or knitwear and superlative for weavers (no pin). This magnetic device solved the infamous "Shawl Hike." Once placed, stay placed.

Before the pieces is fired, colorants are brushed on using a technique taught to me by my mother, Beth. My Mom was an accomplished Tole and decorative painter. Each piece is a different look, with no two pieces alike as shown in the photo.

Using alternative techniques to working with clay is a hallmark of LickinFlames. Our work is primarily experimental and in some ways that's what makes the work so playful. The piece takes several weeks to dry and then the finishing can take place. We use a mixure of flour and water and develop gluten strands in the mixture. When the piece is removed from the kiln at about 1300 degrees F, we dip in the mixture and watch as the gluten resists the flour from carbonizing into the surface of the piece. Gluten. Who knew?!

And just before it's sent to you, the piece is packaged in it's own gift box.

Remember that because of the handmade nature of the piece, some variations should be expected. Even though we carefully fire each piece in the same manner, variation occurs and gives unique qualities to the piece. The quality is always the same standard that LickinFlames is known for, but some variations in color, design element placement and decoration patterns needs to be allowed.
